HALLIDAY

Michael Alexander Kirkwoode Halliday was born in England. He eived three years in China, Where he studied about Lwo Changpei University of Pequin and about wang Li in University Longnan, after he come back and di doctorate in Linguistics in cambidge. He taught chinese during many years, he changed his dominion of specialization in Linguistics, grammar and systemic functional development, elaborated about the bases established by his British professor Jr. Firtth and a group of European linguistics of the beginning of the 20 century of the University of Progue. In 1965 he became o Linguistics professor at the University of London. Halliday went to Australia where he became a Linguistcs professor at the University of Sydiney in 1976 and where he stayed until we retired. He founded the semiotic social field. He worked with different fields of language study, he won a prize of emeritus professor of Sydiney University and Macquarie University in 1987, and nouadays he is a professor at Hong Kong University. In 1990, he became a pioneer of speech analysis with his talk "News Signification Forms: the Aplicated Linguistics Challenge". Old in Aila Conference in Salónica.

Halliday nasceu na Inglaterra, e em seguida ele viveu por três anos na China, onde estudou sobre Luo Changpei na Universidade de Pequim, e sobre Wang Li na Universidade Lingnan, antes de voltar e fazer doutorado em Linguística em Cambridge. Após ter ensinado chinês durante vários anos, ele mudou o seu domínio de especialização em linguística, elaborando sobre as bases estabelecidas por seu professor britânico Jr. Firth e um grupo de linguístas europeus do início do século XX, a faculdade de Praga. Seu trabalho seminal sobre este modelo foi publicado em 1961. Ele se tornou o professor de linguística na Universidade de Londres. Em 1976 foi para Austrália onde se tornou professor de linguística na Universidade de Sydney, onde permaneceu até se aposentar. Foi ele quem criou o campo da semiótica social. Ele trabalhou em várias regiões de estudo de línguas, e recebeu o prêmio de honra ao mérito na Universidade de Sydney e Macquarie University, em 1987, e é atualmente professor na Universidade de Hong Kong. Com sua palestra " Novas formas de significado: O desafio de linguística aplicada", realizada no Aila Conferência em Salónica. Em 1990 ele se tornou um dos pioneiros do eco- análise de discurso crítico.

CELSO LUFT

Celso Luft was born in a city inhabited by German descendants, immigrants. He was a teacher's son. His father taught him music and languages. When he became a teenager, he went to the seminar of Irmãos Maristas, at Instituto Champagnat, in Porto Alegre. He graduated in Classical Languages at PUC-RS and he did a course of specialization in Portugal. He was a professor at UFRGS and at Faculdade Porto- Alegrense in Sciency and Language.In 1954, Celso went to France to study. From 1955 to 1956, he studied with Lindley Cintra, in Lisboa and did a specialization course of Portuguese and Linguistics at Coimbra University.In1963, when he was forty years old, Celso married to Lya Fett, when she was twenty-one years old, and she became a writer, Lya Luft. They met during a university entrance examination, and later, she was his student. Then, Celso known as Irmão Arnulfo, abandoned celibacy to marry. They had three childern: Suzana (1965), André (1966) and Eduardo (1969).Form 1970 to 1984, he keept a daily column in the Correio do Povo News, called Mundo das Palavras, about language issues. Next year he published Língua e Liberdade.In 1985, Celso and Lya divorced, and she decided to dedicate herself to psichology and also to the writer Hélio Pellegrino, who died in 1988. In 1992, Celso and Lya married again. He died in December in 1995, after two years of sickmess.He is author of many books used in school nowadays.

Carlos Mioto

Carlos Mioto was born in Estrela D’ Oeste – SP on 17 December in 1949. He graduated at PUC in Language. He did is doctorate at the University of Campinas in 1992 and his doctorate at the University of Siena.

Currently, he is a professor at UFSC, at this university, he is the coordinator of the research group Grammatical Theory and Brazilian Portuguese and areas of research on grammar and Brasilian Portuguese

He works with Chomsky’s Generative Grammar, which is characterized by the formal character. He explains the structure in natural languages.
